There are so many reasons to trade across Europe, but as the following analogy highlights, without suitable knowledge there’s a need for extreme caution:

‘A Captain of a container ship, experienced in warm waters, sails through cold waters on his way to new ports where he sees a small piece of surface ice. His knowledge of the situation gives him no reason to take avoiding action, causing delay and adding cost. The problem was, it wasn’t surface ice!’

While a lack of European market knowledge might not necessarily sink a business, it will undermine its performance, reduce its efficiency, and expose it to risk. So many businesses sail-on blissfully unaware of their missed opportunities and exposure to risks.

A problem for smaller businesses in particular who understand they need focus and knowledge, is being able to justify the investment required in a suitably qualified and experienced member of staff or independent advisor, ahead of seeing a return.
