Professional Background

My interest in European markets developed while still at school, having been given privileged access by the late John Morgan CBE, a family friend. In the final part of John’s illustrious international automative career, he chose to work “locally” as he put it, as the Director of European Sales alongside Sir John Egan, making, as reported, a crucial contribution to the resurgence of Jaguar Cars. It came as no surprise that I went on to work for French, Italian, Swedish and German European automotive manufacturers, before setting up my own businesses using the knowledge I had gained in working in European business development, including sales and marketing, supply-chain, and routes to market.

The UK’s vote to leave the EU in 2016 sparked significant concern in many businesses, not just in the UK. I decided to move my main focus away from trading in my own products across Europe, to focus on helping other businesses. This included a highly insightful contract working with the Department of International Trade as an EU Transition Advisor, guiding hundreds of UK businesses as well as the DIT’s own International Trade Advisors, most of whom have no professional international qualifications, particularly around Customs, the foundation of international trade.

Despite achieving high level professional international trade qualifications earlier in my career, given the significant technical changes taking place with legislation and process, particularly around Customs, I launched back into further technical studies with professional trade organisations while continuing to work with businesses. I continue to be an active member of these trade organisations, which are high quality ‘open discussion’ professional communities, fulfilling a significant role in questioning developments or lack-of, and informing policy makers.
